Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a safe and effective way of improving the appearance of your smile without causing damage to your teeth.

Home Tooth Whitening Kits

“Take home” teeth whitening kits can be used in the comfort and convenience of your own home – but since they are provided by your dentist, you still have the guidance of a professional while doing the teeth whitening treatment.

Take home teeth whitening kits include trays that are custom-made to fit your teeth.  These whitening trays are also designed in such a way that your gums are not exposed to the whitening solution so that your gum tissues stay safe as you whiten your teeth.

The process takes 3 visits in all.  We will make a custom fitted tray, which you take home to wear.  The whitening gel is placed in these trays and they are worn overnight each day for a 2-3 week period.  This produces a gradual lightening in the colour of the teeth.  The effects can last for years, though the teeth may darken if you smoke or drink a lot of coffee or red wine.

In Surgery tooth whitening

Sometimes known as “laser whiting”, although it doesn’t really involve a laser!  This procedure takes place in the dental surgery because the chemicals used are much more powerful.

Before tooth whitening starts your dentist will take a ‘shade’ to record the starting colour.  A special protective coating is placed on your gums and the cheeks and lips are kept clear.  A concentrated tooth whitening gel is applied to the teeth and the whitening reaction is catalysed (sped up) with intense light.  The gel is then cleaned off the teeth and the shade is checked.  If you want more of a colour change, the dentist can repeat the process (up to a maximum of three applications).
